Members of the Hersam Group have strong personal commitments to education, outreach, and professional development.

Some of our favorite outreach activities include:
- Mentoring visiting undergraduate students each summer as part of the MRSEC Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
- Volunteering with the Junior Science Club and Coding Club of the Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Club organized by the Materials Science Student Association (MSSA)
- Teaching classes to Chicagoland high schoolers with Splash at Northwestern (which was co-founded by a Hersam group member!)
Group members lead and actively participate in a number of Northwestern-based organizations, including:
- Materials Science Umbrella Society (MSUS), which serves as the graduate student chapter of MRS, AVS, and Material Advantage
- Materials Science Student Association (MSSA)
